Laser fungal nail treatment shows great promise and is pain free.

I run for exercise and after developing a blood blister beneath the nail the entire nail came off. I was frustrated as I later noticed a brown black discoloration as the new nail grew back in. I treated this nail with the laser and after just a few months began to notice improvement. This is what my nail looks like today more than 1-year after that treatment. It is important to understand that dark spots found on the skin and in the nail bed are suspicious. Often a piece of that tissue is removed and is sent to the lab for inspection to make sure it is not Something important like a skin cancer aka melanoma. I was aware that I never had such Discoloration before the repeated trauma of running and so had a low level of suspicion. If you Or anyone in your family has a history of melanoma report that to your doctor before having therapy.

Do your nails look like these

F.A.Q. LASER TREATMENT OF FUNGAL NAILS

Q. How does the laser treatment work?

Using one of the most advanced lasers currently available, near infrared laser light passes through the nail with typically no damage to the nail or surrounding skin. At the time of the procedure the fungus is expected to be destroyed. However, no visible change is seen until the nail begins to grow out. In a few months, a more normal nail is expected to appear with complete re-growth of the nail taking up to 9-12 months.

Q. Is the laser treatment covered by my healthcare insurance?
A. No, the procedure is considered cosmetic and is not covered by health insurance.
Q. Is the procedure painful?
A. Most people do not feel any pain. Some may experience slight warmth or an occasional snapping sensation during the procedure.
Q. What is the recovery period?
A. There typically is no need to limit activity. You may resume all normal activities immediately. If you have any problems or questions, contact the office immediately.
Q. How long does the procedure take?
A. The amount of time varies on the degree of involvement of the nails. Very thick nails are mechanically reduced to a more normal thickness with specialized equipment. The laser is then applied to the nails typically taking only a few minutes. Overall, a visit for consultation and treatment will take anywhere between 20-40 minutes.
Q. Can the fungus return or not go away?
A. The fungal infection is expected to improve with just one treatment. Clinical reports to date have demonstrated effectiveness in approximately 80% to 90% of patients noticing significant improvement. As with all medical procedures, a 100% guarantee is not possible. In addition, since fungus is present everywhere in the environment, re-infection can occur. Your doctor can recommend preventative strategies to reduce the chance of re-infection.
Q. Can I polish my nails or have a pedicure?
A. You can apply polish to the nail immediately after the laser treatment. However, it is important to remove all nail polish prior to your treatment. Changing socks and shoes frequently is helpful, as well as controlling excessive perspiration if present.
